What can we learn from Invictus? - Writing Wednesday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,

Recently, I watched the film Invictus, with my family. It has got a lot of really good actors in it like Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. It's set during the beginning of Nelson Mandela's presidency in South Africa. Due to the fact that the South African football team has been doing particularly badly, Nelson asks the captain of the team who is played by Matt Damon, to try and win the World Cup. The film, I find, is really interesting because it doesn't just talk about white people discriminating black people, it also talks about how black people have decided to treat white people, considering what they did to them in the past. Nelson Mandela was locked away in prison for 27 years because of his racial background. He was dragged out of his home and locked away in a cell at arms length and width. Everyday, he was forced to break rocks with a pickaxe in the boiling sun. However, he survived and became the president of South Africa later on. Though despite other people's wrong doings, he forgave them because he knew that in order to move on, they needed to cooperate and work together. One of his body guards was a black male who at first refused to work alongside some of the white co-workers but eventually got along with them because Nelson persuaded him to work with them. There was also a black football player, called Chester, who got all the support from the black people because they refused to support some of the white football players. However once the Bafana Bafana as they were called, won the World Cup against New Zealand, everyone was so overjoyed that they didn't care about racial background anymore. It must have been difficult for the black population to make that transition into trusting white people again, considering what they've been through in the past, but that decision made everyone get along again. This film teaches us that no matter what racial background we come from or what the colour is of our skin, we are all human beings. That is something we can carry through to the present day.

Have you watched this film before? Let me know in the comments below and I'll be sure to reply to them. I ♡ hearing from you!
