Was Extinction Rebellion going too far? - Writing Wednesday
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,
Recently, there was a massive scandal to do with Extinction Rebellion where the group of protesters stood on the roof of a train at the tube station, to prevent the vehicle from moving. This was done, as a way to not only raise awareness of how much we rely on fossil fuels and how much it affects our lives when it is taken away, but also as a way to publicise the group and what they do, so that they can get more recognition for the causes they do for the environment.
This however, has caused outrage amongst the people who were supposed to get the tube that day. Many of the people there were considered to be working class citizens and many had to go to work, in order to get food for their children. One young girl even missed her ballet exam because of all the delay. The people were so annoyed that they began dragging the man off of the roof of the train and they began yelling at the protestors saying that they were just trying to feed their families. The protest was supposed to be peaceful and despite their intentions, the situation rapidly turned sour and many began throwing things at the protestors, putting themselves in dangerous situations, and nearly getting hurt.
Whilst seeing things like this makes me quite excited because of all the different political views that go behind this, it also makes me incredibly scared because people are scapegoating one another by putting blame on certain people, when the climate change issue is in fact all of our fault. I understand that people are getting desperate and want to make a change as quickly as possible but it isn't going to happen by manipulating the current democratic system, the thing that people have worked so hard to try and achieve. Instead of picking on one another, we should stand together because the more people we have, the better the chances are of us finding a solution to this crisis. There are lots of things individuals can do to help the environment like using less plastic, eating less meat, and using our bikes more than our cars but what is going to make the biggest difference is the things we do as a collective. I understand that that was what the protestors were trying to do but they have to understand that that was never going to be the outcome. The situation made people angry and that was completely understandable considering the fact that, being part of the working class, they couldn't afford to have people holding them up. Despite what they were trying to do, I think it was a bit ignorant for the head of Extinction Rebellion to deal with the issue in this way as it has caused havoc and has achieved hardly anything. We need proper long term solutions that are going to come from sorting out the crisis properly and not in a matter of seconds.
