Dance is a universal language - Dance Saturday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,

Despite what people have made it out to be, dance is probably one of the most inclusive art forms out there. As you all probably already know, I am going to be starting up my Zoom dance classes again very soon and recently, I have been thinking a lot about what I would like to bring to my own dance classes that's new. After thinking it over, I have come to the conclusion that I would like to make my classes more inclusive and more enjoyable to a wider range of people. In my personal opinion, I think that some people have forgotten what the true meaning of dance is. Nowadays, dance has become more about the technique, the competition, the commercial world, and the fame and less about the performance, the originality, the enjoyability, and the socialisation. A lot of people in the dance world have forgotten that at the heart of some of the oldest forms of dance, people were trying to bring the community together and were not trying to sell fictitious version of themselves in order to make money. When I say that I would like to make my dance classes more inclusive, I don't mean that I want to tick boxes or undermine the discipline of dance, I mean that I would like to open up my classes to a wider range of abilities. I am currently teaching only one student every Tuesday and that's something that I very much enjoy doing but recently, I have come to the realisation that I would like to create more of a school that encourages all types of people to learn how to dance. The magical thing about dance is that it can be taught visually and kinetically and everyone can learn from each other. Yes, there are some great well-rounded dancers out there, but we are also human and we all have our weaknesses that can be improved through the help of others. This is why I refer to dance as a universal language because I truly believe that although we have different passions in life, we all understand what movement is and we can all learn from each other. Making my dance classes more accessible to different abilities is therefore my primary aim.
