Scudamore's staff party + a hectic journey to Spain - Lifestyle Monday
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,
If you follow me on my Instagram stories, @jujupage1, you would have seen that I attended a staff party last week organised by Scudamore's, the punting company that I work for in Cambridge. At first, I wasn't sure if I would be able to go. The staff party was on a Wednesday evening and I was expected to fly out to Seville, Spain, early the next morning with my parents. I wasn't sure if I would get enough sleep for my journey the next day if I did end up going but when I went to work on Tuesday, my two river tour guide friends, Sophie and Leonie, convinced me that it was a good idea that I should go, even if it was only going to be for a couple of hours. To be honest, I'm glad I did go because it was a lot of fun. The party was hosted on Robinson Crusoe Island, which is a green space located by the river going up towards Grantchester. I was expecting there to be a few drinks, as well as a couple of snacks, but there ended up being a catering company there serving us burgers and salads, as well as this drinks company, who served us the alcohol. There were different activities available at the party too such as rodeo, sumo wresting, and even axe throwing! I only tried the axe throwing in the end but I found it entertaining seeing people dressing up as sumo wrestlers and attempting to balance on a plastic cow. At first, it took me a while to get speaking to people but as more staff members started coming in, it wasn't hard to socialise. I ended up eating my burger with Sophie and Leonie, which was really nice. Then, one of the tour guides called Harris came up to me and he convinced me to give axe throwing a go. It turns out that we were both not too bad at it and we hit the wood a good number of times. Then Nico came up to me for a hug and quick hello and soon after, I was back watching people crash into each other in the sumo wrestling! I so wish I could have stayed longer because it looked as though people were wanting to go out clubbing with each other afterwards but alas, my dad arrived at 10pm and I needed to sleep before leaving the house at 4:15am.
Now, when it came to the journey to Seville, I don't think I experienced anything quite like it! Our flight to Seville was at 8am on Thursday and my mum decided it was best to leave the house early so that we had enough leisure time before our flight. However, what would have been a quick 30 minute journey from Cambridge to Stansted, ended up being a 3 hour long journey! This was because, 10 minutes away from Stansted Airport by car, we were stuck in a massive traffic jam! Before we arrived at the scene, I was casually speaking to the taxi driver about my IB course and my gap year, and what I hope to do during this time away from school. Then shortly afterwards, as the taxi driver approaches the M11, we see a bunch of cars stopped in front of us, not even moving. The taxi driver said "Oh well, that doesn't look good," and I knew from then on that the situation really wasn't great and it would take hours to resolve the problem. We had basically arrived at the beginning of a serious accident that happened a few minutes before. A large lorry carrying cars had caught on fire so fire engines and ambulances rushed to the scene of the accident to resolve it. However, because it was so dangerous, both lanes of the M11 had to be closed until it was safe enough to reopen. Looking back, the delay was funny but the accident certainly didn't seem to be. The taxi driver was really kind and tried to relieve the stressful situation by playing music in the car but after 2 hours, I could tell that this was making my mum, who hated that kind of pop music, even more tense. My dad attempted to have a logical conversation with my mum about other alternatives. Someone had already missed their flight in a taxi beside us and my dad thought it was smart to see if other flight times were available. But my mum just snapped back and said, "Sorry, I don't deal well with this kind of shit!"I felt sorry for the taxi driver who had to deal with three very stressed out travellers in his car but it was a miracle we even made it to Seville. At the airport, we were slowed down by security and a long shuttle to the gate but thankfully our flight was delayed and we made it. Seville is beautiful, that's all I can really say for now.
