Overcoming writer's block - Lifestyle Monday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,

Although I write a lot, there have been many times when I've picked up the pen or the keyboard and have struggled to push out any sort of word. Writer's block can affect even the most experienced of writers and it has the capacity to slow down productivity. Before lockdown had started, I was told to write an essay for English and despite spending the whole weekend attempting to do it, I simply couldn't put pen to paper and any word that I put on the page sounded really rubbish to me. It also really annoyed me because I had a deadline to complete it by and although I tried really hard to complete it, it still wasn't working. Thankfully, on Monday evening after cancelling my French revision to find time, I started to write and I didn't stop. There are usually three key factors that cause writer's block: pressure, fatigue, and fear of failure. If you were to analyse why I got writer's block over that English essay, it would probably be all three of those things. Pressure because I had a deadline to complete it by, fatigue because I'd spent so long doing it that I became tired, and fear of failure because I had actually written a great answer to an exam question prior to this and I was scared that I wouldn't maintain the same high standards. Like with many other things, when you write too much, you have to learn to distance yourself in order to overcome the writer's block. What my mum said was true, there's no point writing if nothing comprehensible is coming out on the paper. The way I like to distance myself is to do something that has nothing to do with writing. I will usually take a break and watch YouTube or Netflix so that my mind is focusing on something else. I think that it's also helpful to wait at least a day before you start writing again because it clears your mind and relieves some of the pressure. I found these tips very helpful when it came to writing my essay and despite finding it difficult, I managed to get 19/24 so I would call that a success in my eyes.
