Mind positivity is stronger than body positivity - Lifestyle Monday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  Recently, I've watched a video that included the American "plus-sized" model, Tess Holliday. In the video, Tess spoke about her involvement in the "body positive" movement which included her aspirations to become a model when she was younger and her own struggles with bullying. From the video, I could tell that Tess was a very bold, liberal, forward-thinking person who joined the campaign for the promotion of overweight women in order to embrace what the beauty and modelling industry was not showcasing. In her interview Tess quite proudly said, "If designers don't start being more diverse and inclusive with their campaigns, I do believe that they will be left behind." Now, when it comes to body positivity, I agree that in the modelling world, there tends to be one type of person represented. Most of the time, this person is fairly slim, athletic-looking, and may have what we consider to be an ...

The art of presenting - Writing Wednesday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  Everybody has their strengths and their weaknesses and I think that one of my weaknesses might just be giving presentations. Some people are naturally good at talking and continuing oral explanations without too much hesitation but for me, I have to think for quite a long time about what it is that I'm next going to say, which makes it a little bit awkward when a class is waiting in anticipation for the end of my sentence and it takes about 5 minutes for me to finish it. Of course I'm exaggerating slightly but I am genuinely not ashamed to say that I perhaps find explaining things in words on a page, where I can think about my explanation a bit more, a lot easier than saying something on the spot. However, as with anything in life, you've got to challenge yourself in order to improve and hazard a guess about what IB is full of....Oral examinations! Yay, not my favourite. I'm slowly getting an idea of how to do pres...

Applying for a job and helping out - My Trip to Tanzania (Post 2) - Lifestyle Monday

Image
He llo everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  Today, I'm going to be continuing on with My Trip to Tanzania series by talking to you guys about my progress. Recently, I have created a CV so that I have got something at hand when I apply for jobs. I included my name, contact details, personal profile, education history, extra skills, work experience, and also a hobbies and interests section. The only bit of work experience I did was when I worked at my dance studio in year 10 so I also decided to include some of the things that I enjoy doing as well in order for the employer to find out a bit more about me. Here is what it looks like: "Juliette Page Personal blog: https://jujupage1sblog.blogspot.com/ Contact details: Address:....... Postcode:......... Telephone number: 07592 042989 Email: juliettepage15@gmail.com Personal profile: I am an organised, motivated, and enthusiastic young person. I am able to listen well to instructions given and I always endeavour to work...

Dance diary entry: Acro, tricks, and injuries in dance - Dance Saturday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  Apologies for not posting on Wednesday. I had quite a lot of things to get done and not enough time to write so sorry for that. To be completely honest, I also don't know if I'm going to be continuing the Strictly Come Dancing 2020 reviews because my mum's not enjoying this year's show as much. I guess Strictly has made the effort to continue the Strictly atmosphere but it's still not the same vibe with its lack of audience and with all the changes that have had to be put in place so if you don't see any more reviews over the coming weeks, it's probably because we're not really watching the show, unfortunately. Anyway, nevertheless, we move onwards and upwards don't we?  For today's post, I thought it would be a nice idea to just give you guys a little diary entry for dance since a lot has been going down. Specifically, injuries! I feel like it is physically impossible for me to go through a...

Money management for Tanzania - My Trip to Tanzania (Post 1) - Lifestyle Monday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, As I've briefly talked about recently, I have been considering going on this amazing trip with my school to Northern Tanzania in the summer of 2022 and I've just spent 2 weeks consolidating my decision. Well, long story short, I've decided to take the plunge and go for it since there's probably not going to be many other opportunities like this in the future. This trip will count towards, hopefully, many parts of my CAS experience (school enrichment programme) so it's an important part of my education and my overall IB qualification. I was a little bit unsure as to whether or not I should do this trip because it is such a big commitment. The preparation for this trip is a lot of work as you have to attend weekly meetings, organise fundraising, and probably work to earn some money but after attending one of the virtual meetings on Microsoft to find out more about this trip, I realised that there was a lot to gain...

Dance diary entry: Being your authentic self in dance - Dance Saturday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  You're probably reading the title of this post and are wondering what it is that I'm going to talk about today? Well, believe it or not, being your authentic and original self in dance is really important. What I mean by this is that it's sometimes important not to commercialise your movements and just to go where your body wants to go instead and express the emotion in the dance that you want to express. I for one am guilty of trying to add a difficult leap or a fan kick or a flip in my dance when in actual fact, sometimes a routine doesn't have to have that many layers in order to be great. Sometimes being organic and true to yourself is better than trying to do what every "dancer" does. This is something that I learnt recently in dance at school and I thought it would be good to share it on here. You're probably asking, if you're not doing what a "dancer" does, then what are you putti...

What's it like learning IB dance? - Dance Saturday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, Today, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about my experiences so far, studying IB dance. If you don't know about the IB qualification in general, it is quite simply a 6 subject course that is designed to broaden your knowledge of the world around you. Although it doesn't go as into depth as the normal A-level, it does get you to look at other fields of work, other than the things you know and are good at and for me, I really like this because it gives you knowledge outside the classroom environment as well. I'm taking English Lang/Lit, Maths Applications and Interpretations, Nature of Science, History, Japanese, and of course Dance. The subjects I'm taking at higher level are dance, English, and history and the other 3 subjects are all at standard level but today, I'm going to be talking about dance. I hope you find this interesting!  I think the IB dance course is very much a contemporary-based course t...

A short diary entry from me: Going to sixth form for the first time - Lifestyle Monday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, On Thursday, I had my first day of school at my sixth form college. I was quite nervous because I didn't know what to expect and it was going to be a new environment for me to be in. This was especially enhanced by the 6 month lockdown period that meant I couldn't go to proper school for the whole time and so stepping into a new building and embracing a new way of life was definitely difficult for me. Although I knew I was finished, I felt like I still needed to go back to secondary school because I never really had time to say goodbye properly or formulate that I wasn't going to study at secondary school anymore.  However, bravely, I woke up on Thursday, had my breakfast, got ready, and got in the car with my dad to go to college. I arrived at 10:00am and signed my name on the register before putting on my mask, sanitising my hands, and going into the hall for assembly. Since we weren't allowed to change and since ...

Should makeup be allowed in school? - Writing Wednesday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, A while ago, I watched a good debate on This Morning about whether or not students should be allowed to wear makeup in school. The debate was between a mother and a headteacher and the mother argued that makeup should be allowed in school because her daughter felt more confident with makeup on in school and therefore found it easier to concentrate in lessons with it on. She said that at her last school, her daughter was constantly put in detentions for wearing too much makeup and bullied for her skin and so the mother got her to change school because she didn't agree with their policies. However, the headteacher argued against that and said that only light makeup should be worn if any as it is good for students to feel confident in themselves and in the school environment and they shouldn't waste time on putting it on every morning. She did also say that if students do have skin issues, they should talk to their GP and ge...

Climbing Blind: A story of trust and confidence - Writing Wednesday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  Well, we've finished all 5 series of Line of Duty. It was a great series that I would recommend anyone to watch. The script writer who came up with that plot has got a heck of an imagination. Who would have thought a series about corrupt police officers would be amazing? I hope series 6 comes out soon, despite the current climate. If you want to find out more about this series then you can read my blog post about it here . It also talks about Wallander, which is a "Nordic Noir" series that we've also finished recently. It's really good and I would also recommend watching it. However, now that we'd finished our favourite series, me and my family were stuck on what to watch so we decided to flick through a few documentaries to see what we liked. I saw this documentary with an interesting title and we all decided to watch it. The documentary was called Climbing Blind and it was about exactly what it said in ...

GCSEs + the Coronavirus - 1 Year To Get To College (Post 16) - Writing Wednesday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, I'm certain you've heard about the Coronavirus pandemic all over the media and the news so I'm sure you all already know what it is. When I first heard about it, however, I didn't really know much about the virus or how quickly it would spread. I now know that it originated in China because people there live in close proximity with their animals and their low levels of hygiene caused the virus to mutate and evolve to become a potential danger to humans. I thought that the virus spread because people travelled and whilst that may have been how it started, many people seem to be just randomly getting the virus. This includes a couple people in my area, Cambridgeshire. It's not the worst a pandemic could get because despite how contagious it seems to be, the death rate on the grand scheme of things is pretty low and it only seems to affect the elderly or people with underlying health issues like where their immun...

How to stay positive when things aren't going your way - 1 Year To Get To College (Post 15) - Lifestyle Monday

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  If you've read my post from Wednesday, you'll know that for some reason, last week did not go entirely to plan. I've been having a lot of issues with coming up with a final piece for dance and my group has struggled to come as one and co-operate. I really want to do well in this, since it is my GCSE and I'm hoping to do dance as an A-level but I'm not going to lie, I was a bit worried this week. However, I soon found out that most groups in my class were in the same position and we were not alone. On Friday after school, I got with my group and we actually got a minute and a bit of our routine done. The future is still uncertain but this is progress. I'm hoping to maybe get at least two minutes done this week. This year in general has been challenging because this is my final year of secondary school and really, it's all been about getting me and everyone else prepared for the exams. It's not only ...

Respect doesn't mean you have to share the same opinion - Lifestyle Monday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  On Thursday, I was getting ready to go out to dinner at this Chinese restaurant in town. I'm usually quite quick at getting ready so whilst I was waiting for everyone else, I watched a random TED talks video and it was actually really inspiring and interesting. It was about a black American man called Daryl Davis, who attended KKK rallies, after befriending a member of the clan. If you know anything about the Ku Klux Klan then you will know that it's actually, ironically, a white supremacist group. Daryl was determined to find the cause of racial hate and despite his parents explaining what racism was to him as a child, he longed to delve deeper and he felt he needed to do that by meeting these white supremacists in person. What he found was that many people were consumed by fear of the unknown and this fear drived people to become defensive and hate on the so called inferior race. However, this, he said, can come from b...

Its not the overall outcome that matters, but how you choose to deal with it - 1 Year To Get To College (Post 7) - Writing Wednesday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, I think anyone is their own harshest critic. Despite the amount of effort I try to put in, I feel like it sometimes doesn't get me anywhere. Today, I had a maths test and a physics test and both of them didn't go terrible but they didn't go amazingly well either. Especially in physics as I've put a lot of effort into learning all the equations needed but I feel like it didn't help that much in the end. It was a hard paper to be honest and everyone found it difficult but I didn't do amazing in physics last time so I'd kind of hoped that I'd do a bit better this time. However, it wasn't exactly the outcome I'd hoped for in the end but I can be a bit hard on myself at times because I want to raise the bar higher and higher each time and make myself improve. Whatever my score is, I'm determined not to let it phase me because at the end of the day, you've only lost if you've given up...

I let stress get the better of me - 1 Year To Get To College (Post 6) - Lifestyle Monday

Image
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, I don't really know what has been the difference between these recent mock exams, in comparison to the ones in year 10, but I've been really feeling the pressure and I've found it difficult to control my nerves. I've been doing a lot of revision, online and in my revision guides and I know that deep down, I know the content for the majority of my subjects but for some reason, it literally feels like I know absolutely nothing at all. I know it's not true but this week, I did let the stress get the better of me and it really showed. I'm part French and I know my second language fluently but on my recent speaking exam, I just had a complete mind blank and I honestly felt like crying in the exam. I wasn't even stressed about the French exam, I was just stressed about everything else and I couldn't even think of a way to extend my answers further.  Long story short, I went home and I cried to my mum bec...
