Will Bayley's emotive contemporary routine, Catherine's cha cha, and Michelle's amazing Halloween foxtrot - Dance Saturday
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,
There has been so much news to do with Strictly and honestly I'm so sad. I'm sad partly because Will Bayley had to withdraw from the competition, as he's injured his knee the week before and he wasn't able to dance on it for this week. I'm also sad because Neil Jones, who's partner is Alex Scott, also injured his leg and is unable to dance this week. Alex had to do a 45 minute rehearsal before the show with Kevin as Neil had injured himself right before the performance! There were a few things that went wrong but they did an excellent job given the time they were given. I'm also sad because Catherine Tyldesley was in the bottom two last week and was voted out of the competition. The cha cha really wasn't her dance and I agree with the judge's decision but I felt like she still had more to give to the competition, as her rumba was amazing. However, that's how the competition works and despite all these scenes of events, I will be talking about Will Bayley's contemporary routine from the week before and Michelle's amazing Addams Family themed Foxtrot because it was great. I shall be talking about Catherine and Johannes's cha cha as well, from last Saturday before.
I think that everyone's hearts were touched when they saw Will and Janette's contemporary routine to 7 Years, my favourite song! Motsi was in tears and I'm not surprised. Before the dance, they showed what will actually went through, as he was born with a disability that affected his joints. Due to this, he had clubbed hands and clubbed feet, which was why he wore specific shoes when he was dancing and he found it difficult to maintain a good posture during his dancing. I also found out that he had cancer and had to be put on chemotherapy at Great Ormand Street Hospital. This was what he based his contemporary routine on and it was so moving. He did the lifts right, he supported his partner, and I really enjoyed the down up movements on the more staccato elements of the music. I did agree with Craig as I thought it lacked a little bit of fluidity but he really struck a chord with the audience and it really showed.
Michelle was on fire in that routine she did. She's such a great actress as she really uses her face in every routine that she does and she really looked like Morticia Addams. Giovanni always choreography excellent routines for Halloween week and this one really lit up the stage. They based the routine on the excellent tango that is performed by Morticia and Gomez Addams in the film. It was really a new creation, which was what made Michelle and Giovanni's routine look amazing. They managed to perform a Foxtrot that kind of looked like a tango. The technique of the foxtrot was amazing as they managed to pair the timing with the down up movements in the routine but they also managed to add staccato and fierceness that made it look like a mixture between a tango and a foxtrot. Michelle also really took on her character and that was also what enhanced he routine.
Lastly, Catherine and Johannes performed a spooky cha cha cha. I liked the music and I really enjoyed how Catherine took on her character role. However, there were a few technical errors that lost her the marks she would have wanted. You could tell that the cha cha was not her dance and you could tell that her confidence in her performance was not at its best. This was partly because she didn't have a very good posture and her left elbow was drooping a bit as she didn't keep it up. She was also a bit rigid in her walks and the hip movements lost the essential fluidity they needed in this style. She also lost control in her upper body when she was doing some of the quicker footwork, as her arm was not remaining still. However, her facial expressions were amazing and she really honed in some of her acting skills needed in Halloween week. I just wish she got to stay in longer because her Rumba was amazing.
